Eighth Sunday after Trinity

30thJuly 2023

We celebrate the eighth Sunday after Trinity in the green season of Ordinary Time. Come and join us.

Collect

Lord God,

your Son left the riches of heaven

and became poor for our sake:

when we prosper save us from pride,

when we are needy save us from despair,

that we may trust in you alone;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Readings

1 Kings 3.5-12 (Genesis 29.15-28),
Psalm 119.129-136, Romans 8.26-39
Matthew 13.31-33,44-52

Our Sunday group for children takes place this week in the hall at 10am. New children are always welcome. Sea Lights will be taking a break during August, but children are welcome in church and there will be activity sheets available. Next week we have an all-age service, 6th August.

Healing Prayer is offered most Sundays after the 10am in the side chapel.

Choir dates There are no rehearsals during August and the beginning of September, although members of the choir will no doubt be sitting at the back as usual, everyone will be invited to join in the Communion hymn. The choir rehearsals start again on 21st September. Fiona

Beach Social Café takes place in church, Tuesdays 10.30am-12noon. All welcome.

Bob’s Card Sale On Sunday 20th August after the 10am service in the hall during coffee. Variety of cards available priced £1.50, £1.00 and 80p. Also, a selection of Gift Tags priced £1 for 5 packs. All proceeds to Church of the Good Shepherd.

(Any old cards for recycling would be much appreciated, please pass onto Bob, or leave in the church porch.) Many thanks for your support.

Art morning

If you’d like to participate in this art morning in preparation for Creationtide reserve your place by emailing Revd Jane (bartlett.jane@ntlworld.com). All art materials provided. Free workshop. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch if you’d like to stay on longer. We meet in the hall.

Creationtide Talk A large group from the church studied Bishop Nicholas Holtam’s book on climate change ‘Sleepers Wake’ at Advent. We are delighted that he is coming to the benefice to do a talk for Creationtide. The talk is being offered across the Hove Deanery and all are welcome.

The next Fellowship Lunch will be on 13th August. It will be a Bring and Share Buffet. Please speak to Joy after the 10am Sunday service or ring if you would like to come. Tel. 01273 462584. New and old members are most welcome. Hopefully we will be able to enjoy some time in the garden, weather permitting. If shopping is a problem, you can pay £5 as usual. Joy Daintree

Sand dance September 2nd, 6pm-8pm The Shoreham Beach Residents are hosting a Sand Dance which will take place on the beach at low tide opposite the Good Shepherd. Our role is to provide refreshments in the church hall - Pimms and soft drinks. We would like some help, preferably two small teams of people serving for just 1 hour. It’s a great opportunity for people to get to know the church and for us to support a community event. If you can help please contact the wardens Angela or Kay

Summer Family Activities

Pet Blessing Sept 3rd, 3pm

A collection is taken for the Dogs Trust and tea and cake follow in the hall sold in aid of the St Francis Fund. Bring your pet or a cuddly toy or photograph of a favourite animal.

Changes to services There is no Celtic Evening Prayer or Saturday morning meditation this coming week.

New group

And finally… Have you seen the lovely new bird stickers on the hall windows? We have been taking action to make the Good Shepherd a more Dementia Friendly church and have been advised to increase our signage for exits, fire exits, kitchen and toilet. We were also asked to ensure all glass doors were clearly marked with anti-collision stickers. This is all part of our commitment to be a fully inclusive church, welcoming all.

Thanks to Sheila Powell and the wardens for all their work on becoming Dementia Friendly.

I work half-time and will be taking some annual leave between 1st to 14th August. Please contact Revd Andrew if there are any emergencies. I wish you all a blessed week,   Revd Jane
