Pentecost

28th May 2023

‘When the spirit rested on them, they prophesied.’ Numbers 11.25.  Image by Revd Jess, see Bible Art below for commentary.

We celebrate Pentecost this Sunday. It is a major feast of the Church’s year when Christians recall how God’s Holy Spirit was given to the disciples after Jesus’ ascension, empowering them to begin sharing the love of Christ throughout the world.  The colour most often associated with Pentecost is red, representing the tongues of fire which the Acts of the Apostles describes appearing above the heads of the disciples as a sign that they had received the Holy Spirit. You are invited if you wish to wear red, or fiery colours of yellow and orange to church this Sunday. We hope you can join us.

Collect

Holy Spirit, sent by the Father,

ignite in us your holy fire;

strengthen your children with the gift of faith,

revive your Church with the breath of love,

and renew the face of the earth,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

.

Readings

Acts 2.1-21 or Numbers 11.24-30,
Psalm 104.26-36,37b, Acts 2.1-2,

John 20.19-23

Sea Lights meets in the hall this Sunday. Thank you, Christy, for leading the group this week. New children are always welcome.

Collection for the Shoreham & Adur Community Foodbank We will be taking foodbank donations in church from Friday 26th May to Sunday 28th May in partnership with the Shoreham Beach Residents. You can also drop off food with Joss Loader at 25 Falcon Close. They would welcome any dried or tinned goods including fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and items such as rice pudding and custard.  Please no dried pasta as they currently have a veritable " mountain"! Jars of coffee, pasta sauce, jam, peanut butter and marmalade would also be very useful please, along with men's and women's toiletries and pet food. We know times are hard but if you are able to spare an item or two, that would be lovely. Thank you.

Admission to Holy Communion During June we will be running a short course on Sunday afternoons (2pm-3.30pm, 4th, 11th, 25th June and 2nd July in the Parish Centre) to prepare children and young people to receive Holy Communion for the first time. In line with guidance from the Diocese of Chichester, we welcome all children from the age of 7 upwards to be admitted to Holy Communion, with the rite of Confirmation usually following in adolescence. Our aim is to gather a group from across the benefice. Please speak to Revd Steve or Revd Jane if interested.

New Parish Administrator – the benefice is welcoming Louise Smith to her new role as Parish Administrator. Louise began on Tuesday 23rd May and is shadowing Sue Clay during her final week in post to enable a smooth handover.

Parish Office opening hours will remain 10-1pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Bob’s Card Sale On Sunday 28th May after the 10am Sunday Service in Church Hall during coffee time. A variety of cards for sale priced 80p and £1. (Any old cards for recycling would be gratefully received, please give to Bob or leave in church porch, thank you.) All proceeds go to The Church of the Good Shepherd.

Christian Aid A big thank you to everyone who helped to make the Big BBQ Bonanza such a success last Sunday. Over a £1000 was raised for Christian Aid. We were very blessed with the weather, our lovely generous guests, our supportive church fellowship and a super team of volunteers. The amount from Church collection is about £400 and the street collection is still coming in.  Thanks to all. Jill Charlish

Service Changes Please note there is no Saturday morning meditation on 27th May and 3rd June. It returns 10th June.

Carbon Footprint As part of our eco church initiative Jan Hundertpfund is occasionally offering the opportunity to check-out your carbon footprint over coffee in the hall after the 10am services. Have a chat with him if you would like to do this online survey.

A trip to the National Gallery

Revd Jane and Judy Short are organising a trip to the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London, on Friday 9th June. Come face-to-face with one of history’s most inspirational figures in the first major UK art exhibition to explore Saint Francis of Assisi’s life and legacy. Presenting the art and imagery of Saint Francis from the 13th century to today, this exhibition looks at why this saint is a figure of enormous relevance to our time due to his spiritual radicalism, commitment to the poor, and love of God and nature, as well as his powerful appeals for peace, and openness to dialogue with other religions. As part of the trip, we will also visit St Martin-in-the-Fields church for afternoon tea (also in Trafalgar Square). The exhibition is free. We will be travelling by train and tube leaving Shoreham in the morning and taking a packed lunch. If you are interested in joining, please contact Revd Jane or Judy (email: judymshort2@gmail.com). More information about the exhibition is here: https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/exhibitions/saint-francis-of-assisi

Healing Prayer is offered most Sundays after the 10am service in the side chapel.

And finally…

Thanks to Richard Durrant for an impromptu ‘warm up show’ in church, ahead of his summer tour. It was well attended and raised £386 in donations for the church. We wish Richard all the best as he travels by bike on his midsummer tour.

I work half-time and the days I am usually available are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday (morning). I wish you all a blessed week,

Revd Jane
