Second Sunday after Trinity

18th June 2023

This Sunday we celebrate the second Sunday after Trinity in Ordinary Time.  We hope you can join us as we continue to rejoice in the wonder of being ordinary. June 18th is also Father’s Day, so we send our blessings and gratitude to the fathers, grandfathers, great grandfathers, Godfathers, and all those with a fathering role, amongst us.

Collect

Faithful Creator,

whose mercy never fails:

deepen our faithfulness to you

and to your living Word,

Jesus Christ our Lord.

Readings

Genesis 18.1-15 [21.1-7], Psalm 116.1,10-17,
Romans 5.1-8, Matthew 9.35 - 10.8 [9-23]

Livestream apologies We are sorry we were unable livestream the 10am service last Sunday - we had difficulties with our internet connection. We hope to resume as soon as possible and are looking for a solution.

Healing Prayer is offered most Sundays after the 10am in the side chapel.

Sealights meets in the hall this Sunday at 10am with Fiona our new family and children’s co-ordinator. New children are always welcome.

Christian Aid Week The total raised from all our activities is £1849.53 including Gift Aid.

A big thank you to everyone who helped to make CAW such a success. This money goes to support farmers and their families in Malawi.

The flowers this week are sponsored by Joy Daintree in memory of her beloved husband Gordon.

New lay ministers of Holy Communion We welcome Frances Wallace, Ann Worrall and Dave Worrall as lay ministers of Holy Communion. They have completed a short course with Revd Steve and Sally.

Retreat Mornings

We are offering two summer retreat mornings here at the Good Shepherd, based in the church, vicarage garden and on Shoreham beach. Each morning begins with some group time, and seeds sown for contemplation. There will then be space for individual quiet on the beach or in church/garden. Art materials are provided, plus other resources for those who wish to make use of them. We finish with lunch (simple vegetarian food provided). Book for one morning or both. The first morning is led by Revd Jane Bartlett, the Associate Vicar of the Good Shepherd. The second morning is led by Canon Tim Higgins TSSF, who for many years has been a Tertiary in the Franciscan religious community. He recently moved to Shoreham following time spent on the Celtic pilgrimage coast of the Llyn Peninsula coast of North Wales. His prior work as an Anglican Priest was as City Canon for Bristol Cathedral. If you would like to book email: bartlett.jane@ntlworld.com or text 07935 538085. There is a suggested donation of £5 each morning. Booking is essential as numbers are limited.

Church Fundraising

We look forward to our summer fayre which takes place on Saturday 1st July. We would appreciate help in any form from our kind and supportive fellowship. Listen out for the call for raffle prizes, cakes , bric-a-brac , nearly new clothes for second hand rose stall and more! Let us know if you would like to help run a stall,  help set up on Friday 30th June or help at the end of the event . Just contact Jill or any member of the ‘funraising’ team.

A thank you from Sue The PCC recently voted to give Sue Clay a donation on behalf of the church, in appreciation of all her wonderful work as our parish administrator. She sends her thanks to us:

Thank you to everyone for the lovely card, message and very generous gift. It has been an absolute pleasure working in the parish office these past thirteen years and given me much joy.  Sue Clay

Lone Worker Policy The PCC has recently approved a new policy in consideration of the welfare of those who might work occasionally or regularly in the church/hall on their own. It highlights some simple safety measures that can be followed. This is being distributed to those people who we know sometimes work alone. If you would like a copy, there are some available at the back of church.

Origami Action The charity Green Christian is encouraging people to get involved with the Great Big Green Week (10th – 18th June) by making origami animals to send to MPs. Paper artist, Tina Luo, has created three, origami designs of species that are at risk of extinction: the Common Nightingale, the Red Helleborine orchid, and the Northern Pool Frog. The UK is one of the most nature-depleted places in the world. The paper creations are sent to MPs urging them to reverse nature loss by backing the Climate & Ecology Bill. If you’d like to take part, Glen Edey is offering an origami making session over coffee after the 10am service on 25th June. More information here: Origami Action (zerohour.uk) And here is information about the Climate and Ecology Bill https://www.zerohour.uk/bill/

Beach Social Café takes place in church, Tuesdays 10.30am-12noon. All welcome.

Adur Art Trail We are delighted to be part of the Adur Art Trail this June, showcasing artists from Shoreham Beach. This will take place the weekend of 17th and 18th of June 2023.More information here: https://adurartcollective.co.uk/

Save the Dates Quiz Night – October 6th

Christmas Fayre – November 25th

And finally… Nine of us from the Good Shepherd went to the National Gallery in London last Friday to see the much acclaimed art exhibition about St Francis of Assisi. The sun shone on us all day. The art was varied, from medieval to contemporary, and captured the spirit of a saint who has much to say to us in our times. We also visited St Martin in the Fields (a church somewhat larger than the Good Shepherd!) and had tea in the crypt. It was a great day out. I have purchased an illustrated guidebook to the exhibition. If you would like to borrow it, please contact me.

I work half-time and the days I am usually available are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday (morning). I wish you all a blessed week,   Revd Jane
