Remembrance Sunday

12th November 2023

Remembrance Day honours those who serve to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life. We unite across faiths, cultures and backgrounds to remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from Britain and the Commonwealth.

There will be an act of Remembrance at the 10am service.  We especially pray for peace at this troubled time. All are welcome to join us.

Collect

God, our refuge and strength,

bring near the day when wars shall cease

and poverty and pain shall end,

that earth may know the peace of heaven

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Readings

Wisdom of Solomon 6.12-16
Canticle: Wisdom of Solomon 6.17-20
1 Thessalonians 4.13-18
Matthew 25.1-13

Crowdfunding appeal At this time of remembrance we launch a Good Shepherd memorial wall Crowdfunding Appeal on social media. We are reaching out to the local community to help raise £6,000 to replace the cracked pebble dash on the east wall of the church and restore the Calvary war memorial. Please help spread the word by sharing our Facebook posts and flyers. You can click here to see the campaign:

Crib Service rehearsals There will be rehearsals for the Christmas Crib service during Sealights on Sunday  19th, 26th November, 3rd, 10th, 17th December. Save the dates and let Fiona Hendry know if your child would like to be involved. The Crib Service will be in church, Christmas Eve, 4pm.

Healing Prayer is offered most Sundays after the 10am in the side chapel.

Shoreline is out this week. Thanks to Adam our editor and all contributors.

Vivace Concert We have a return visit of the Vivace choir, entertaining us with Christmas cheer. The Christmas concert with guest Ukrainian singers is on Saturday 9th December in the church at 3pm with refreshments and raffle. Tickets £10 from Hilary Jolly (available in a couple of weeks’ time). The concert is in aid of GenUkrainian- a Ukrainian charity that treats children up in the Carpathian mountains for a 21 day camp. It's time away from the troubles with therapists and psychologists to help traumatised children, who have lost their parents, regain their childhoods.

Occasional Choir The main choir is now practising for the carol service (Sunday 17th December, 6pm). If anyone would like to join us, Fiona will be running the Occasional Choir on Monday mornings in church at 10.30am starting on Monday 13th November. All are welcome - the more the merrier. We will be learning one special item  for the service and if time allows we might reward ourselves with a few extra Christmas songs and carols.

Christmas carols at the Longshore

We will be taking a keyboard to the pub on Saturday 2nd December at 6pm. All are welcome to come and have a Christmas sing song. The pub will be serving food and drink as usual. If you have an amp with two or three MIDI input connections and the connecting leads which we could borrow for the evening, please talk to Fiona West. Thank you. Also there will be an open rehearsal / sing song in the church hall after coffee on Sunday 26th November led by Fiona. (Word sheets provided!) We will be singing carols and Christmas Songs.

Christmas Fayre Saturday 25th November. We will need help on the Friday evening to set up and clearing away on the Saturday. Please contact Jill Charlish (Tel: 07796932420). There will be a basket at the back of church of items for the raffle from Sunday 22nd October.

Posada We will be celebrating ‘Posada’ at the Church of the Good Shepherd, during the weeks leading up to Christmas. On Advent Sunday 3rd December 2023 small Nativity Sets will set off on their journey around homes in our parish and neighbourhood, where the Holy Family figures will be welcomed for two nights.  A special place can be prepared, a candle can be lit and prayers can be said.  After two nights the Holy Family figures are carried to another home.  This continues until Christmas when the Nativity Sets are returned to church.  ‘Posada’ originates in Mexico.  The word means a ‘place to stay’. If you would like to be part of the ‘Posada’ celebration this year, please sign up on one of the lists at church.  These will be available early to mid-November.  Thanks to Jenny Stride for organising this journey of special visitors. Canon Tony has made a short YouTube film about the posada that can be viewed here:
