Newsletter, Second Sunday of Advent, 6th December 2020

The Second Sunday of Advent,

6th December, 2020

This Sunday we return to church for both our 8am and 10am services.  You need to book for the 10am. This service will be live streamed for those unable to attend in person. Although it is the first Sunday of the month it will not be an all age service as the children are needed in the hall to rehearse for the Crib service.  The Tuesday 9.30am service also returns to church.  It will be good to see each other again in person, even if at a safe distance and behind a facemask!

Collect

Almighty God,

purify our hearts and minds,

that when your Son Jesus Christ comes again as

judge and saviour

we may be ready to receive him,

who is our Lord and our God.

Readings

Isaiah 40.1-11, Psalm 85.1-2,8-13,
2 Peter 3.8-15a, Mark 1.1-8

Outdoor Pop-up Christmas Fayre

Sunday 13th December, 11am-1pm

This year the church Christmas Fayre will be different due to the epidemic.

All stalls are outside and socially distanced. A raffle, mulled non-alcoholic drinks - and if we're lucky a special treat.

Wrap up warm and come prepared to enjoy yourselves! Even if it rains or snows, the show will go on!

 The ‘Funraising’ Team.

Remember we can only socialise in groups of six outside, so please don’t gather in large numbers.

The St Francis Fund

The fund is here to help anyone facing a financial crisis, leading up to Christmas.

The fund is able to help by gifting small grants to those in need, within the Good Shepherd.

Please contact Edgar Powell, in confidence, if you, or anyone you know, is in need. Edgar: 01273 453709

International development aid: lobbying your MP

Bishop Martin is encouraging congregations to lobby their MP about the Government’s spending review.  There is a proposal to reduce our contribution to international development aid of 0.7% of Gross National Income. Bishop Martin writes: ‘The commitment to this aid was a landmark cross-party achievement and it represented a moral imperative to work for the eradication of poverty as a source of conflict, in which women and children are the first casualties, and the environment is often the second.

The present Government campaigned in the last election on the basis of commitment to this 0.7% contribution.  Honouring that commitment should withstand the economic challenges of the pandemic, since we remain one of the world’s wealthiest nations and have an important contribution to make to its peace, stability, and recovery of reverence for the earth, our common home.’ If you would like to write to our MP, Tim Loughton, you can do so here: https://www.timloughton.com/contact
