Sixth Sunday after Easter

22nd May 2022

‘The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul,’ Acts 16.14. Art by Revd Jess. See below for commentary.

This Sunday, the sixth after Easter, can be celebrated as Rogation Sunday, a lesser known agricultural festival within the church calendar, but one that seems to be making a come back, especially in rural areas.  Rogation invites people to ask for a blessing on a particular place and its inhabitants. Since medieval times there has been a tradition of processing around the parish ‘beating the bounds’, praying for God’s blessing on the crops and livestock, and for the well being of the community. We will end our service this Sunday with a special Rogationtide prayer. We hope you can join us.

Collect

Risen Christ,

by the lakeside you renewed your call to your disciples:

help your Church to obey your command

and draw the nations to the fire of your love,

to the glory of God the Father.

Readings

Acts 16.9-15, Psalm 67, Revelation 21.10,22 - 22.5, John 14.23-29 or
John 5.1-9

Raising money for Christian Aid

David and Glen from our congregation are walking 75 miles during Christian Aid week with Pilgrims following part of the ancient pilgrim path from Chaldon, in Surrey to Winchester.

They will share stories of their concern for the world and meditate and pray for peace and compassion.

Please join them in prayer.

They aim to tread lightly on the earth and hope that those who cannot join them will support them by giving during Christian Aid week.

If you would like to donate to Christian Aid via the

Pilgrims’ Just Giving Page please use the link below. Thank you.

Bring a camping chair or rug. Please lift share, walk or cycle where possible. If the weather is wet we will meet in church – a message will be posted on the church website on Wednesday evening if we are to meet in church.

Foodbank Collection

We are having a collection for the Shoreham and Adur Community Foodbank in church from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th May. This is in collaboration with the Shoreham Beach Resident’s Association. Food can also be dropped off with Joss Loader at the fort end of the beach - 25 Falcon Close.

The foodbank informs us that they especially need the following: marmalade, honey, Marmite, peanut butter, toilet rolls, tinned Fish, including pilchards, tinned ham, tinned chicken, small tins of potatoes and sweetcorn, tins of fruit, peas, tomatoes, mushrooms and carrots, long-life fruit juice, tea bags (40s and 80s), pulses, cereal.

Celtic Evening Prayer

Apologies but there is no Celtic Evening Prayer again this week.

Morning Meditation

We begin a new season in our weekly meditation group, exploring the Gospel parables during our lectio divina practice. Lectio divina is a contemplative way of reading a short passage of scripture, with the 'ears of the heart'. If you would like to engage more deeply with the profound teachings found in the parables, join us from June at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Shoreham Beach. The group meets in person and on Zoom.

And finally…

The Christian Aid Week Big Brekkie was a great success last Saturday. It brought together church people and those from the wider community, some of whom volunteered to help. Thank you to Jill Charlish and all the volunteers for such a great event. We are yet to get the final total raised for Christian Aid, but it is in the region of £1,100!

I work half-time and the usual days when I am available are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings.

Blessings and prayers for you all this Eastertide. Revd Jane
