The Fourth Sunday of Easter, Sunday 3rd May 2020

We are looking forward this Sunday to our first Sunday service on Zoom, a virtual platform where we can see and talk with each other. It’s very easy to join, and you can even do this on a landline.

There will also be the opportunity to stay after the service for a ‘virtual’ coffee time together. Lockdown is surely teaching us how much we value our opportunities to connect with each other.

You may have seen in the news that the Chichester Diocese has appointed two new suffragan bishops:

  • The Revd Ruth Bushyager, currently Vicar of St Paul’s, Dorking in the Diocese of Guildford will serve as Bishop of Horsham, and will be the first woman bishop in our Diocese, for which we give thanks.
  • The Revd William Hazlewood, currently Vicar of the United Benefice of Dartmouth and Dittisham in the Diocese of Exeter will be the next Bishop of Lewes.

We pray for them both and their families as they take up this new calling and look forward to the possibility of meeting them in the future.

Collect

Risen Christ,

faithful shepherd of your Father’s sheep:

teach us to hear your voice

and to follow your command,

that all your people may be gathered into one flock, to the glory of God the Father.

Readings

Acts 2.42-47; Alt.O.T. Gen 7; if used, Acts must be the second reading.

Psalm 23

1 Peter 2.19-25, John 10.1-10

Afternoon Study and Fellowship Group

Wednesday 6th May at 3.30pm to 5pm

Waves splashing

We had our first group last week which was very enjoyable. We gather on Zoom to watch a talk together, recorded at St Paul’s Cathedral as part of their excellent adult education programme. We then have a discussion and end with prayer.

This week it will be The Sacramental Sea: A Spiritual Voyage. Edmund Newell explores the sea in Christian history, theology and spirituality, moving from the Bible to the present day. Perfect for all you sea lovers out there.

Email Rev’d Jane if you’d like to join.

Telephone Worship

The Church of England has launched a telephone line which offers daily readings, reflections, prayers and even hymns. It’s a free phone number, and may be especially valuable for those who are at home without the internet. Ring 0800 804 8044 if you would like to hear it each day.

Conversations with God Beyond Words

A retreat at home... based on Jesus walking on the water. Led by Rev'd Jess

6 day online prayer-painting retreat, running from 25th to 30th May. This will be mostly in the form of twice daily:

  • Brief optional Zoom meeting and prayer (10am and 2pm)
  • Bible meditation video
  • Prayer-painting meditation demonstration video with companion instruction sheets

There will be an optional short Zoom evening service at 8pm.

Obviously, because people have home commitments, the meditations and prayer-painting can be done at any time which suits you, and the live sessions are completely optional, the retreat can work without them, but there would be less sense of being with others on the journey.

All materials and equipment supplied except for paper which you can order from the SAA(best value I could find).

Here is an example of a prayer-painting from the one of the videos:

Services This Week

Sunday, 3rd May, 10am – All Age Service live on Zoom

We ask you to join 15 to 30 minutes before the service if you are new to Zoom. You will need a laptop, desktop, tablet or smartphone with built in camera and to be connected to the internet. You don’t have to buy any new software or register for Zoom services.

There is a second option to join by dialling in on a telephone, either landline or mobile. You won’t have video connection, but you will be able to hear the service and speak.

You can download the service sheet with the readings for you to print out if you are able. Don’t worry if this is not possible. Please note that once the service begins at 10am we can’t admit any latecomers as it might disrupt the worship.

Tuesday, 5th May, 9.30am - Holy Communion live on Zoom

Please note that for those who don’t want to join us on Zoom the sermons will be available to view later on Facebook and the church website.

And finally, here’s a colourful photograph of one of the activities our children have been enjoying during lockdown. Many thanks for sharing your creations with us.
